What is e-Portfolio


An electronic portfolio, also known as an e-portfolio or digital portfolio, is a collection of electronic evidence assembled and managed by a user, usually on the Web. Such electronic evidence may include inputted text, electronic files, images, multimedia, blog entries, and hyperlinks. E-portfolios are both demonstrations of the user's abilities and platforms for self-expression, and, if they are online, they can be maintained dynamically over time. Some e-portfolio applications permit varying degrees of audience access, so the same portfolio might be used for multiple purposes. This initiative is still being actively implemented in the ICT in Science Education courses. There are many advantages produce e-Portfolio compared to traditional portfolios. Basically these are due to its ability to:
  • Hyperlink documents with ease, thus increasing connections with different e-portfolio elements.
  • Increase portability where students do not have to carry heavy portfolio files,e-portfolios can easily be accessed via an internet connection or saved onto a CD.
  • Improve, motivate and make students' enjoyable. Students who have developed an e-portfolio reports feelings of satisfaction and having a sense of ownership for an authentic task based learning outcome.
  • Improve and horn students ICT skills in terms of developing exciting and interesting teaching materials using softwares and other open source tools.
  • Incorporate multimedia elements such videos and slide shows.
  • Share teaching and learning materials with peers, students and future employers.
